Excellent illustrators strike again!

It has been a while since we had excellent illustrators on our blog but this week's poem was a great one to think about as a picture:

The Wild Wolf Cry

Late at night,
when it's quiet and still,
the grey wolf stands
on the shadowy hill,
and he lifts his head
to the black night sky,
and he makes the sound
of a wild wolf cry.

And if, at night,
when it's quiet and still,
you hear that wolf
on the shadowy hill,
if you hear the sound
of his wild wolf cry,
just know he is talking
to the sky.

Here are our 3 favourite Room 10 illustrators:

Super Star!

Way to go, Caragh!  You rock!

It was Girls Brigade awards night.  I wanted to get an award and everyone thought I was going to get the creative award but... I got the top award for all the juniors!  They said I always have a smile even on a dark evening :-)

Mosese the champion!

We are all proud of you too Mosese!

Yesterday at Athletics I got a medal for coming first out of all the year 3 boys at school.  I came first at shot put and hurdles and I got some second places too.  I felt fantastic!  My brother Vernon and my sister Taufa came first too and got medals too.  My mum and dad were very proud of us.

Space discovery...

Awesome creating, Luke!

Luke made an amazing space station in Room 10 one day.  It looks like a real one!  Luke says "It can be used for discovering things that everyone has not seen in space.  It can be used for spying too!"

Amazing Gardeners!

One day some Room 10 girls were walking around the junior area when they saw a plain, old, boring planter box.  They decided to plant some flowers for the school.

Martha, Petra, Lily and Anya planting beautiful flowers.

Meet our newest Kiwi!

We have a new Kiwi in Room 10 - and it isn't the fluffy bird in the photo...it is John!

John and our Room 10 ambassador, Spike the Kiwi!
Yesterday John went to a citizenship ceremony to become a New Zealander.  He told us that the Mayor, Mr Jono Naylor, was there.  He had to sing the National anthem and they told him about our special New Zealand rules.  There were police and army men there and lots of people becoming New Zealanders.  He met some Filipinos there and the Philippines is the country John's family came from.  John's Dad had to put his hand on the Bible when Mr Naylor was talking about being a New Zealander and then they had a YUMMY afternoon tea!

Marvellous Martha!

We have an incredible artist in our class...Martha!  She entered a competition for Newspapers In Education and won!  Her prize was a beautiful book and a certificate.  Here is a photo of Martha with her prize and Lily holding the newspaper with Martha's amazing collage picture in it (it is the one in the middle of the page).

Well done, Martha!

Special visitor!

Mosese had a special visitor...at his house!  It was Ngani Laumape from the NZ Warriors rugby league team.  Ngani knows Mosese's aunty.  Mosese had a white cap and Ngani signed it.  Awesome!

You look so happy, Mosese!

Mixed up stories..yahoo!

Joel W and some friends were making mixed up stories in reading today.  Here is the one he shared with us:

Then we got to thinking...
We have been learning about making our stories better ALL YEAR!  Could we change the mixed up story to make it even better?  We decided to have a go!

Here is the first 'new' story:

Overrated R2-D2 the unit droid
bathed in the squishy gooey mud
and fell instantly in love and ended up kissing
a fierce fiery dragon.

Here is the second one:

Shocking R2-D2 the unit droid
dived in the squishy gooey mud
and instantly fell in love with
a fierce fiery dragon.

We only changed a few words but we liked these stories better!

Athletes in Action!

We are having a lot of fun at the moment practising for athletics.  We go out twice a week and work through the 6 events that we will have to do on Athletics Day.  Here are a couple of super athletes in action!

Caragh and Namitha showing great style on the high jump.

Joshua's awesome gift

Joshua is in the team that won the Division 5 trophy in hockey this year.  He came to school last week with something special to show us.  Here is his story:

Sarah Naylor works with my Dad at the Eye Clinic.  He told her about my hockey team and that we won the Division 5 trophy this year.  She has a daughter who plays for the New Zealand Hockey "Black Sticks" - EMILY NAYLOR!!
Sarah said to my Dad that she would get her daughter to sign a small t-shirt and give it to me as a gift.

Here is a photo of Joshua and his very special t-shirt:

Awesome Joshua!  Maybe one day you could play hockey for New Zealand too!!

Super Spring Art!

We had the lovely Mrs Ayers teaching in Room 10 the other week.  One of the activities we did with her was some Spring art.  We used paint and pastels to make the pictures then cut out a black shape for the tree.  We also added a sun made out of orange and yellow paper.  Lastly we scrunched up some tissue paper to make the blossoms on the tree.  Here are a couple of our pictures:

Xander the Scientist

We have some amazing scientists in Room 10!  Xander showed us 2 projects he has been working on.  Here they are:

Xander on the left with his periscope - made to earn a badge at Cubs.  Joel W is holding a poster to show the steps Xander did to make it.  Incredible!

After our class thinking about salt crystals, Xander went home and did his own experiment.  He made some notes so that we could follow what he did.  Keep up the awesome thinking, Xander!

Calendar art!

It is a few years since we last did 'calendar art' but information will be coming home soon about how you can turn your child's art into a calendar, diary or a set of cards.  Room 10 made pictures using paint and scratching techniques...and we added a little bit of collage as well as a 'mini me' picture of each child for fun.  They are on display in our class but here are 2 examples by Xander and Edrei:

Awesome work boys!  Hang on tight!

God is Holy - the Joseph story

We have been reading in the Bible about Joseph because we are learning about Egypt and the 'Rise and Fall of Empires'.  We can learn from history so that we don't make the same mistakes as the people before us.  We can also learn the right things to do!  We thought about Joseph and what we could learn from his life.  Here are our ideas:

Joseph knew a lot about God and trusted Him.  We can learn a lot from him!

The Creation Station # 3

One of the activities got us looking through microscopes to see leaves and onion skins 'up close'.  The onion skins looked blue under the microscope!  There are amazing patterns on leaves - if you get a chance, have a look for yourself!

Joshua and Richard looking very scientific...

The Creation Station # 2

Gabriel has a bottle of oil and water - can you see how they don't mix?  Even when the children tried REALLY hard to shake up the bottles, they couldn't get the oil and water to mix together!

...but it was fun trying, wasn't it!

The Creation Station #1

A group of children at school worked with Mrs Little to make a 'Creation Station' set of activities as part of our school Science Fair.  Room 10 was the first class to go around the activities and we were really impressed with the work Mrs Little's group had done.  Here is an activity that Grace had fun with:

This is how air moves across the wings of a plane and makes the plane 'lift' into the sky!

Music to our ears...

We really enjoyed a visit from Mr Bob Bickerton on Wednesday.  He talked to us about musical instruments and played about 16 different ones for us to hear.  He was very funny and very clever at playing.  Here he is with his harp:

The harp had the most beautiful sound.  It was our favourite instrument to listen to from the show.
Thanks Mr Bickerton!

Using strategies in maths

A group in Room 10 has been thinking about...thinking!  How do we work out problems in maths?  How do we get to an answer?  Our thinking is our 'strategy'.  Here are some examples.  The problem was about how many planks of wood you would need to build a pig pen!  The answer was 70 but you can see that there are different ways to work it out when we looked at the different sides of the pig pen:

Great strategies Joel W, Christian and Hamish!

More skipping

We told you it was catching!  Here are some more 'snippets' of skipping from Room 10:

From the top - Gabriel showing the basic jump, Hamish doing a criss cross, Namitha hopping and Petra doing a fast jump!  Well done, guys!

The skipping bug...

Have YOU caught the skipping bug yet?  Room 10 have really got it bad!  Here are some of our amazing skippers practising for the big Jump Rope day coming up in a few weeks:

The top photo is Martha and Lily working together, then we have Grace doing the running step and the third photo is Maia, Anya, Joel W and Tatiana having fun jumping with shared ropes!

Beautiful salt!

Do you know how beautiful salt can be?  When we did an experiment this week (finishing off some ideas from last term), we ended up with these amazing salt crystals:

Look closely - there are incredible patterns!
The experiment was based on the question:  If sea water evaporates, how come it doesn't rain salty water?  So we made some salty water (just normal kitchen salt mixed with tap water) and put a few spoonfuls onto a plate in the sun...and waited!  After a couple of days, most of the water had evaporated and we were left with these stunning crystals!  You CAN try this at home!

Hello B3 from Hastings Christian School!

We are very excited to have our first ‘blogging buddies’ over at Hastings Christian School.  It will be fun to share our learning with you and we hope you will give us comments that will help us to do better in our work.  Here is a bit about who we are:
Our school has 3 teams in it: Aroha (the juniors in Year 1-3), Tumanako (the Yr 4-6 classes) and Whakapono (the intermediate kids).  The team names mean Love, Hope and Faith.  Our class is Room 10 and we have 28 Year 3 children – 17 boys and 11 girls.  Our teacher is Mrs Sutherland and she loves playing the ukulele!  We have another teacher on Tuesdays called Mrs Bannister and she does extra exciting things with us that are awesome!  Our principal is Dr Ferrar – he is a ‘doctor’ of science and sometimes he goes around the school doing experiments that end with a big explosion!  We blog to share our work with family and friends everywhere.
Dr Ferrar at work...

We really like sport too!  This year we have had special training from coaches in hockey and soccer.  At the moment we are doing swimming in the ‘Swim for Life’ water safety programme and later this term we will also do a Jump Rope for Heart day to raise money for the Heart Foundation.  Next term we will do special training in netball.
Our hockey training!

It’s hard to say what our favourite subjects are because…we like everything!  Last term we had a special focus on Science and that was really cool.  This term we are thinking about History and the Egyptians.  We want to find out if they lived God’s way…or what happened if they didn’t.  It fits in with our Christian Living theme ‘God is Holy’.

We'll talk to you again soon!

Matthew and Maxie!

We had another 'furry friend' turn up on Friday - Matthew's dog, Maxie.  She is a real cutie and was very well behaved in class...but she was excited to be in Room 10!

Kelly Sports

We had a great time on Thursday morning with the guys from Kelly Sports.  They set up some fun activities that got us moving!  Here are some action shots from Room 10:

Gabriel, Mosese and Paula 'fishing' - catching a ball in a net.

Josh, Anya and Joshua try out for the All Blacks...

Martha and Lily showing super soccer skills.

John, Mosese, Tatiana, Joel W and Luke bowl for the hoop!
